Science Explains What Happens To Your Brain On Sugar

Can you give up sugar? They told us we should do it, but it is very difficult to do.

This is because when our taste buds detect sugar: fructose, sucrose, maltose, glucose, etc.

In our language, the so-called sweet signal is processed by the reward system of our brain,, drugs and alcohol.

Sugar is one of the few foods that activates the reward system of

the brain and is one of the reasons why we get hooked and it costs us so much to give up.

In the PET brain scan, you will notice some similarities that

a person reacts in the same way with sugar as with the cocaine that causes the addiction. Surprised?


Dopamine is a chemical that is produced in the same part of the brain that is connected to the “reward system.”

The red areas of the scan below show where dopamine is present, most in a “normal” brain.

When we eat something that seems delicious to us and we feel rewarded, our dopamine levels increase.

The only way an addict can get a peak of dopamine is by anticipating a reward, compared to the actual experience.

If an addict finally has that reward, their dopamine levels will not increase since

they have already flooded their brain with dopamine just by anticipating the reward.

Brain comparisons: normal vs. addict

First, let’s compare the dopamine receptors in each brain, between addicts and non-addicts.

The images of the upper row in the PET brain scanner come from patients with addiction disorders, and the lower row comes from non-addicted people.

These PTE brain scans show that addicts have fewer average

dopamine receptors (D2 receptors) in their brains, so the weaker dopamine signals are sent between the cells.

Your reward response is not as sensitive as a normal person, not addicted.

And they think that they can compensate by consuming in excess what they are addicted to.

This is what sugar does to your brain, exactly the same as smoking, alcohol and cocaine.

About sugar consumption

Just like the PET brain scans showed us, cocaine and sugar can be incredibly bad for you.

Once they are consumed in large quantities, your body will not only be less sensitive to

the effects they have but consuming more sugar can cause obesity and a life with diabetes.

It is also known that sugar has an impact on your metabolism, as well as on your brain function.

Excessive consumption of sugar can cause heart disease, cancer and is known to even cause wrinkles.
