In late December 2019 Chinese health officials first reported cases of respiratory illnesses associated with a seafood market in Wuhan, China. A week later they confirmed that a novel coronavirus, COVID-19, was associated with the cluster of cases.
Coronaviruses can range from a common cold to more serious illnesses. Symptoms can be mild, with just a runny nose or cough, but can also become much more serious, including fever and even leading to pneumonia. We spoke to Dr. Mark Mulligan, infectious disease specialist at NYU Langone Health, to learn more about how COVID-19 spreads, what makes an individual high risk, and what symptoms to look for.
