(Reno Gazette-Journal) Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill Wednesday that would ban mental health professionals from preforming sexual conversion therapy on minors under the age of 18.

Senate Bill 201, which was sponsored by Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, would make it illegal for licensed mental health practitioners to provide therapy designed to change a minor’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Nevada has a long record of passing progressive legislation to protect the LGBTQ community with bipartisan support, and I want to thank Governor Sandoval for signing this critical legislation to protect LGBTQ youth,” Parks said in a statement on Wednesday. “Banning conversion therapy makes Nevada a safer place for children who are at a higher risk of anxiety, depression, substance abuse and even suicide.

“This bill is a major step forward in building a more equal and inclusive state.”
